Based on the life and times of the first President of Bangladesh, ‘Bangabandhu’ Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Mujib: The Making of a Nation, is directed by Shyam Benegal and features Arifin Shuvoo as the titular character, while Nusrat Imrose Tisha plays his wife Fazilatunnesa (Renu). The film closely follows Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s life, how his interest in politics developed from an early age, in the presence of the stalwarts of the time: Mahatma Gandhi, Fazlul Haque and Suhrawardy. We also get to understand what inspired him to rise against the then-government, fight against Urdu imposition, create a six-point programme, and post the war for the liberation of Bangladesh in 1971, give shape to the nation.
As Mujib, Arifin Shuvoo has done a commendable job - from his mannerisms to the way he looks. The screenplay features quite a few of Mujib’s historical speeches and Arifin has tried his best to deliver them in the icon’s signature, authoritative style. As his wife Renu, Nusrat Imrose Tisha’s commanding performance is a great match for Arifin’s Mujib. Their relationship is well-depicted and their easy companionship is relatable.
The cinematography by Akashdeep Pandey captures the lush paddy fields and beauty of Bangladesh. A lot of archival footage has been used in the film to depict the actual conflict and its consequences. However, the use of VFX, green screen and special effects leave a lot to be desired. The airstrikes and their horrific consequences, for instance, deserved better handling. Crucial details about the liberation war and its human cost are missing - one does not know if it is deliberate. But the use of a voiceover to simply talk about the devastation, the slaughtering and how the nation rises from its ashes, does not have the required impact. The problem is also with the length of the film. At nearly three-hours, it may not appeal to audiences expect to pay and watch this biopic in the theatres.

Music by Shantanu Moitra draws from the rich folk roots of Bengal and Ki Ki Jinish Enecho Dulal (Banna in Hindi), Ochin Majhi (Abujh Majhi in Hindi) and Sajo Sundari Koinya (Sundar Sajaniya in Hindi) are all quite hummable.
Shyam Benegal, the astute storyteller that he is, takes a giant of a man and brings him closer to his audience, with all his strengths and vulnerabilities. Although he doesn’t have a lot of space for character development beyond Mujib and his immediate family, Benegal introduces us to the man behind the nation builder, a doting father and a humanitarian.
